Autism, Masking, and the Weight of Expectations
Autistic people often grow up learning to perform a version of themselves the world finds more acceptable. We’re taught to make eye contact, to mirror social cues, to keep our hands still and our voices even. These aren’t always bad lessons—in fact, learning social tools can be empowering. But when those tools become requirements—when “passing” becomes survival—that’s when the mask starts to take over.

This is what we call masking. It’s the daily, often unconscious performance of hiding autistic traits to avoid judgment, rejection, or punishment. It can look like success on the outside—but inside, it’s exhausting.
Becoming an endless game of if I stop now, I’ll lose everything I gave up to get here.
Masking creates stress, and that stress builds until it drains every mental and emotional reserve you have. The more exhausted you get, the harder it becomes to mask effectively—which leads to mistakes, embarrassment, and shame. That shame feeds isolation. And the cost of breaking character can be devastating: lost jobs, lost community, even lost family.
We want to be kind. We want to connect. But as this cycle continues, meeting even everyday expectations becomes harder and harder—until, eventually, what’s being asked is nothing short of self-erasure.
That’s not inclusion. That’s performance.
That’s why our newest design in the Not Playing by Your Rules collection speaks from the stage of that silent, private struggle. Drawing inspiration from classic theatre, it asks:
“What does it cost to play normal—and how long can I play?”
For many autistic people, the answer is more than most will ever see.
This design doesn’t reject social learning—it honors the effort it takes. It’s a tribute to everyone who’s ever come home from a “normal” day and collapsed, not from physical labor, but from carrying the invisible weight of social demands and sensory strain.
You deserve to take off the mask.
You deserve to be seen.
Not for the part you played—but for the person you are.
